11-Day Family Safari on a Budget
Start your family safari by exploring Ol Pejeta, getting up close and personal with endangered species such as the black rhino, and with luck spotting a few of the big five. Next, fly down to the Masai Mara for game drives across the open plains and see elephants, giraffe, leopard, lion, thousands of wildebeest and much more. All the while children can learn bushcraft with the friendly Masai warriors. End your journey in Msambweni, a gorgeous hideaway on Kenya's south coast of Mombasa.

Day 1-3 On safari at Sweetwaters Serena Camp
This lodge lies in the centre of the 360-square-kilometre Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary that sprawls across the plains overlooked by Mount Kenya. The ecosystem here supports one of Africa's highest densities of wildlife, from black rhino (and the rest of the Big Five) to antelopes, primates and many birds. Watch the animals hunt, graze, breed and fight for survival on the plains, then return to camp, a sheltered oasis set around a waterhole. Gaze across the alternately lush and golden plains towards snow-capped Mount Kenya, and get up-close sightings of the creatures that visit the waterhole. The lodge offers day and night game drives, bush walks, birdwatching walks, lion-tracking, and camel rides around the camp or into the conservancy. Visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, the rhino sanctuary, the Ol Pejeta Educational Centre and the Ereri Cultural Village. Cool off in the swimming pool, play a board game, or relax and watch the passing cavalcade of animals at the waterhole.

Day 4-6 Old Style Safari under canvas in the Masai Mara
Along a bend in the Talek river, reached by a swinging footbridge sits Mara Intrepids camp, tucked in a prime position inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Shaded by large trees along the river bank with everything being a short drive away this camp blends the wondrous comfort of permanent camping with efficient and welcoming staff and some lovely sweeping views over the surrounds. Close by is some exceptional game viewing-expect some thrilling river crossings! Enjoy drinks by the campfire, dinners in the bush or simply sitting on your porch listening to the grunts of hippos and the splash of crocodiles. Nothing can really beat the sheer beauty of being out in the plains of the Mara as millions of wildebeest, zebra and antelope make their way along the great migration, it is a once in a lifetime sight. Cultural trips to nearby villages as well as hot air balloon rides can be arranged. Back at camp there is a lovely pool area to relax in as well as an adventurers club for the kids.

Day 7-10 Relax at The Ocean Spa Lodge in Msambweni
Finishing off a Mara safari? The Ocean Spa Lodge is a great place to wind down and feast your eyes on the blue, blue Indian Ocean before heading to the airport. Opened in 2014, this pretty resort offers everything you need and more. Its 14 thatched suites are strung along quiet, white-sand Msambweni beach on Kenya's secluded south coast, just 40 minutes south of populous Diani. It's a great honeymoon destination and a safe place to holiday with your children. When you've had your fill of chilling by the pool, hop onto a boat to any of the local marine reserve islands to snorkel and explore the underwater life or, on Funzi Island, to see some of Kenya's best nesting sites for sea turtles; or go deep-sea fishing to find marlin and sailfish. If you're wanting to swim from the lodge, remember that there's quite a walk to deeper water at low tide (although the rock pools are interesting), and waves at high tide can be rough.
