A romantic retreat at Elsa's Kopje Lodge

Day 1-3 A romantic retreat at Elsa's Kopje Lodge

Meru National Park is recognised as having a greater diversity of animal species than any other park in East Africa, so prepare yourself and your camera for large elephant herds, hippo, lion, caracal, reptiles, a rhino sanctuary and more than 400 species of birdlife. Elsa’s Kopje, named after the lioness made famous by George and Joy Adamson, is an unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled retreat set into a rocky hill above the site of George’s famous orphaned lion camp. Take game drives and walking safaris with professional guides whose knowledge of the park is unrivalled. Pick up a rod and refreshments and settle on the palm-lined banks of one of Meru’s many rivers, then share your catfish, tilapia or barbel catch with the herons, monitor lizards and spectacular kingfishers. Enjoy an al fresco breakfast on the plains, surrounded by wildlife; or soak up the sunset with traditional safari sundowners. Visit the local Tharaka community, dip in the pool or relax at the spa.

Enjoy one-of-a-kind views in Samburu

Day 4-6 Enjoy one-of-a-kind views in Samburu

Be as chilled or as active as you like at this super-chic, eco-friendly lodge in the private Kalama Conservancy in Kenya's Samburu Nature Reserve. Saruni Samburu is the only lodge in this 200,000-acre (81,00-hectare) unspoiled wilderness. The villas are open and spacious, with views that really do deserve being described as panoramic. See the "Samburu Five", a handful of rare animals endemic to this ecosystem – gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Grevy's zebra and Beisa oryx, and a host of other species your Masai warrior guide will identify. Day-time game drives are offered to explore the sights at Kalama Conservancy, Buffalo Springs National Park and Samburu National Park, and you can see Kalama's nocturnal species on a night drive. Take guided walks to investigate the bush and find the birds you've been wanting to check on your tick list. Feeling fit? Trek up Mount Ololokwe, Samburu's sacred mountain, or improve your family's bush skills at the Warrior Academy.

Relax into the safari way of life at Ol Pejeta

Day 7-10 Relax into the safari way of life at Ol Pejeta

In the heart of Kenya’s Laikipia region, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a shining example of conservation for the entire continent. Home to the last 3 Northern white rhino in the world, it’s also a sanctuary for Southern whites and critically endangered black rhino, as well as chimpanzee. In the heart of it all is Alex Hunter’s charming bush camp of the same name, where traditional game drives and walks in Big 5 territory are offered alongside visits to the projects - truly a place to discover the best of both worlds. There is a definite focus on conservation at Ol Pejeta and visits to the Endangered Species Enclosure to see the Northern white rhino and to the chimpanzee sanctuary take place daily. There are also opportunities to spend a morning with the lion research team and track the cats in the area, as well as with the rhino patrol guards. Intersperse these with traditional Big 5 game drives and walking safaris and this is a safari that’s very hard to beat!
