Enjoy profuse wildlife at a camp favoured by the famous

Day 1-3 Enjoy profuse wildlife at a camp favoured by the famous

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, sprawled across 65,000 acres (263 square kilometres) of Laikipia wilderness, is top of many people's game reserve wish list for its legendary wildlife viewing. With more than 70 recorded mammal species, the conservancy is home to lion, leopard and jackal, the largest concentration of Grevy’s zebra in the world, more than 130 black and white rhino, and too many bird species to list. To the south rises snow-capped Mount Kenya, to the north are the arid lands of Tassia and Il Ngwesi. Between them lie areas of pristine forest, fertile grasslands, extensive springs and acacia woodland. Lewa offers evening horse rides, which let you get close to the plains game, as long as you're an experienced rider. If not, rock onto a camel instead! Your mount may be less elegant, but it's a perfect way to see the action. The camels are led by Samburu handlers. Breakfast or toast the setting sun in the bush, visit a Samburu village or chill at the lodge. The choice is yours.

Relax at a well established tented camp in the Masai Mara

Day 4-6 Relax at a well established tented camp in the Masai Mara

Feel what the early explorers must have experienced when they first arrived in the vast wilderness of the Masai Mara. Devoid of imposing buildings and large groups, Elephant Pepper Camp opened its canvas tents more than 20 years ago as one of the original camps in the Mara North Conservancy and remain true to their principles: it's about the wildlife. Without compromising on luxury, you'll spend evenings around the campfire and long days enveloped in the savanna. Some of the rangers have been at Elephant Pepper Camp since its beginning. Open-sided vehicles are fitted with camera stands and charging sockets to make the morning and evening drives as immersive as possible. Game drives are longer than average. Guided walks bring you closer to the bush to discover animal tracks, flowers and micro-ecosystems. Special walks for kids are also available. Visit the Masai village to get a feel of how the people of the Kenyan bush live.

On safari in Amboseli under the watch of Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 7-9 On safari in Amboseli under the watch of Mount Kilimanjaro

Like all the Elewan Collection of lodges and camps in Tanzania, Tortilis is set in an iconic location. In this case it's the western Amboseli, where game viewing is fruitful, accommodation is first-class, the food is Italian-style delicious, the guides are local and there's a responsible attitude towards conservation and the local communities. Here, overlooked by Mount Kilimanjaro, you can see a elephants, hippo, lion and other big cats, and plentiful birds. Don't forget your camera when exploring Amboseli and the private 30,000-acre game concession around Tortilis. Take safari drives and game or birdwatching walks with knowledgeable local guides, most of whom are Masai. The safari vehicles are open-sided with photographic equipment stands. Visit local Masai homesteads to see how these ancient people live and purchase some of their beautiful beadwork and bright shukkas. Back at camp, there's a pool and spa, and places to rest.
