Go ape with the giant mountain gorillas of Rwanda

Day 1-3 Go ape with the giant mountain gorillas of Rwanda

At Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, in the foothills of Rwanda's Virunga range, you're just a short trek away from mountain gorilla territory, home to the world's most endangered great apes – the same giants that the late Dian Fossey introduced to the world. Just 790 or so of the gorillas remain, so an encounter is a definite privilege. It offers comfortable accommodation, good food and happy staff. Gorilla treks are clearly the prime reason for visiting, but other interesting outings are also offered. Hike to see the playful golden monkeys that are endemic to the high-altitude forests of the Volcanoes Park; explore the seven-hectare Sabyinyo property to see the 40-plus bird species that shelter here; investigate the surroundings and local villages on foot or mountain bike (with a guide); or visit the nearby twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo and the ecologically important Buhanga Sacred Forest.

Stop over in style at the House of Waine

Day 4 Stop over in style at the House of Waine

Although every Kenyan adventure starts or ends with a night in Nairobi, it doesn't have to involve a run-of-the-mill city hotel. House of Waine is proof of this. Set well outside the central business district on 2.5 acres of soul-satisfying gardens, this boutique hotel starts your vacation off on the right foot. Once the family home of the Waine family, it still retains the feel of a stately, yet homely place to rest and regroup, or plan and prepare. There is lots to do beyond the hotel. Day trips in and around Nairobi are themed by culture, shopping or history. The Giraffe Center is just around the corner and protects the endangered Rothschild giraffe. This dangly, curious creature is found only in the grasslands of East Africa. The Karen Blixen Museum is also nearby. A former coffee plantation and previous home of the Danish author who wrote "Out of Africa", it is ideal for an idle afternoon.

Explore the Masai Mara from a true African spirit

Day 5-7 Explore the Masai Mara from a true African spirit

There’s no tearing through the bush, ticking off animals from a vehicle at Alex Walker’s Serian; this is a safari that’s about listening, watching and feeling the very heart of the bush and engaging with all its inhabitants. Back at base, the camp is a haven of tranquillity, tucked away in the wonderful Mara North Conservancy under a sleepy grove of olive trees. And funnily enough, the local Maasai translation of ‘serian’ is ‘calm’ or ‘serene’ – which is exactly how you’ll feel after a few days here. Where do we start? Game drive to your heart’s content with your private guide (included in the price), practise your archery skills with the local Maasai, breakfast on the banks of the Mara River, head out on a walking adventure through the magical terrain (maybe even with a night of fly camping? ) and soar through the air on a balloon safari. So what doesn’t Serian have? Lots of people and lots of cars – you’re pretty much on your own up here and it’s heaven.

Relax in luxury in Masai country, where legends abound and Hemingway dreamed

Day 8-10 Relax in luxury in Masai country, where legends abound and Hemingway dreamed

Don't come to Campi ya Kanzi if you're anticipating plunge pools, spas, fancy lighting, marble bathrooms, wi-fi in the wilderness and the associated unsustainable uses of generators and water (the scarcest resource in Africa). This is indeed a super-luxurious camp, but of a different kind. Enjoy a gin and tonic in Hemingway's beloved green hills in front of Mount Kilimanjaro and get to know extraordinary Masai trackers. Campi ya Kanzi is the only safari lodge on this huge Masai-owned reserve. Spend a few days exploring some of the major highlights on guided game drives and walking safaris. Track the wildlife and trek to the cloud forest of the Chyulu Hills. Investigate the plains to see the animals from close up and enjoy the excellent birding. Speak to the management if you fancy a flying safari to Kilimanjaro or an excursion to Tsavo East to visit orphan elephants reintroduced into the wilderness. That's why it's called "Camp of Hidden Treasure"
