10-Day Footsteps of Hemmingway
Kick off this trip in the rugged, raw lands of Samburu in northern Kenya, with stunning views and a diverse ecosystem. Fly into the teeming open plains of the Masai Mara, where wildebeest roam in their thousands and the big cats are not far behind. Experience the iconic land that inspired Ernest Hemingway, the Chyulu Hills; a jewel of clouded forest and savannah plains, tucked between Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, overlooking the highest and most iconic mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro.

Day 1-3 Relax into the safari way of life perched in the roof of Africa
Be as chilled or as active as you like at this super-chic, eco-friendly lodge in the private Kalama Conservancy in Kenya's Samburu Nature Reserve. The villas are open and spacious, with views that really do deserve being described as panoramic, and the animals are spectacular. See the "Samburu Five", a handful of rare animals endemic to this ecosystem: gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Grevy's zebra and Beisa oryx, and a host of other species your Masai warrior guide will identify. Day-time game drives are offered to explore the sights at Kalama Conservancy, Buffalo Springs National Park and Samburu National Park, and you can see Kalama's nocturnal species on a night drive. Take guided walks to investigate the bush and find the birds you've been wanting to check on your tick list. Feeling fit? Trek up Mount Ololokwe, Samburu's sacred mountain, or improve your family's bush skills at the Warrior Academy. Have breakfast beside the Ewas Ng'iro River or dine beneath the stars.

Day 4-6 Enjoy the secluded Saruni Mara Lodge in its wilderness setting
Saruni Mara Camp and its sister tented camp, Saruni Wild, lie in the Mara North Conservancy. The sanctuary is a partnership between conservationists, investors and 800-plus Masai landowners, for whom this is the first time they have received income from wildlife. The camps lie in the path of the Great Migration (July to November) and the less well-known Loita Hills migration (December to May), which sees thousands of wildebeest arriving at the conservancy. Animals cover the landscape, so drives across the savanna are hugely rewarding. Take night drives through the Mara Conservancy, investigate the surrounding forest and valleys on foot, with a guide, to see the smaller creatures and some of the Masai Mara's 550-plus bird species. If you're travelling with your children, the Masai-run Warriors Academy offers special courses in bush skills and animal tracking. Hike up Kilelioni, the highest peak in the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem and visit the local Masai market, held every Thursday.

Day 7-9 Game drives and walks in Amboseli at Campi Ya Kanzi
Don't come to Campi ya Kanzi if you're anticipating plunge pools, spas, fancy lighting, marble bathrooms, wi-fi in the wilderness and the associated unsustainable uses of generators and water (the scarcest resource in Africa). This is indeed a super-luxurious camp, but of a different kind. Enjoy a gin and tonic in Hemingway's beloved green hills in front of Mount Kilimanjaro and see animals at every turn safe in the knowledge that this beautiful lodge sits lightly on the land it occupies. Campi ya Kanzi is the only safari lodge on this huge Masai-owned reserve. Spend a few days exploring some of the major highlights on guided game drives and walking safaris. Track the wildlife and trek to the cloud forest of the Chyulu Hills. Investigate the plains to see the animals from close up and enjoy the excellent birding. Speak to the management if you fancy a flying safari to Kilimanjaro or an excursion to Tsavo East to visit orphan elephants reintroduced into the wilderness.
