Start your trip in the red soils of Samburu, where beautifully-clad tribesmen escort you across the wilderness atop their treasured camels. Then, put your feet up in the back of a safari vehicle and search the banks of the mighty Ewaso Nyiro for leopard, elephant and giraffe. Lewa is only a short drive away, but a vastly different landscape with the option of camel or horseback to explore. Head on up the escarpment to Laikipia’s quiet, private ranches and journey across the plains on horseback.

Enjoy Kenyan hospitality, Moroccan style and global appeal

Day 1-3 Enjoy Kenyan hospitality, Moroccan style and global appeal

Not all safari camps are of the canvas and game driving variety and Sasaab is definitely one of them. Well, there’s a little bit of canvas around and you can certainly game drive in the striking wild lands of the Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves, but that’s just the beginning; there’s also camel rides, spa treatments, fly camping and walking safaris at this elegant Moroccan-inspired retreat. As the only tourist initiative in the area, ties with the local Samburu are strong and $50 from each stay is donated to the 600 families in the Westgate Community Conservancy. Beautifully designed, ethical and eco-friendly… could this be the perfect safari camp? As the only lodge for miles around, activities at Sasaab are unique and private. Visits to the local Samburu community are wonderful and varied; stop off at the market, visit the school, play football with the kids or even have dinner. Fly camping is another not-to-be-missed opportunity and can even be done for more than one night.

An adventurous safari hideaway at the foot of Mount Kenya

Day 4-7 An adventurous safari hideaway at the foot of Mount Kenya

Established in 1972 in the Lewa Conservancy in Northern Kenya, Lewa Wilderness is one of the country's oldest safari camps where you can see the Big Five in unaffected and authentic comfort. Found inside 62,000 acres of conserved land, the camp is surrounded by well maintained gardens and views stretching over the valley and towards the hills. Here conservation and respect for the wildlife work hand in hand with a passionate team dedicated to creating an unpretentious and memorable guest experience. Don't miss the opportunity to do as much as possible when it comes to activities at the lodge. Day and night game drives, horseback and walking safaris and hikes amongst the abundant wildlife to be found in the conservancy. There is even a gym and tennis court to keep you fit, both with wonderful views over the bush so you don't miss any animal sightings even while working up a sweat!

Enjoy serenity at Borana Lodge in Laikipia

Day 8-10 Enjoy serenity at Borana Lodge in Laikipia

When the grandfather of the present owners of Borana arrived in this spot, he simply fell in love with its isolation and wildness. Now his descendants have built a lodge on the land that he adored. Made of local, sustainable materials, Borana Lodge sits subtly on this malaria-free landscape, with panoramic views across the Samangua Valley and the Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest and Mount Kenya beyond. There's no shortage of activities to suit everyone. Day and evening game drives, horseback and guided walking safaris, mountain biking, really good birding, fly fishing, joining an anti-poaching team, a visit to a permaculture farm and even, weather permitting, paragliding! Or simply spend a day at the lodge, enjoying the pool with its Samangua Valley backdrop. If you are exploring, look out for African wild dog, spotted and striped hyaena, zebra and antelope galore and a number of cat species.
