How to Get to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve: All Transfer Options

How Do You Get to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve?

The most common way to reach the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is by scheduled or charter flight from Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport to Skukuza Airport or Arathusa/Sabi Sand airstrips, followed by a short 15–30 minute road transfer to your lodge. The total travel time from Johannesburg to your lodge is 2–3 hours by air, or 5–6 hours by road — both options are regularly used, and each has advantages depending on your budget, luggage, and schedule.

Option 1: Fly to Skukuza or Sabi Sand Airstrips (Recommended)

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the Sabi Sand. Federal Air (FedAir) and Airlink operate scheduled daily services from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo to Skukuza Airport (SZK) — a small airstrip inside Kruger National Park, 20–40 minutes from most Sabi Sand lodges by road.

Scheduled Flights (Federal Air / Airlink)

  • Route: Johannesburg O.R. Tambo → Skukuza (SZK)
  • Flight time: approximately 1 hour
  • Multiple departures daily: typically 08:00–14:00 departures
  • Cost: approximately ZAR 3,000–5,000 (USD 160–280) per person one-way
  • Luggage: 20 kg limit in soft bags on scheduled services

Private Charters

  • Charter directly to the airstrip nearest your specific lodge (each major lodge has its own landing strip)
  • Cost: ZAR 15,000–35,000 one-way for a light aircraft (3–5 seats)
  • Flexible scheduling — depart when you choose
  • Worth considering for groups of 4+ people

Option 2: Road Transfer from Johannesburg

Driving from Johannesburg to the Sabi Sand takes approximately 5–6 hours, covering 480–520 km. Route options:

  • N4 via Nelspruit: Fastest route — N12 to N4, through the Lowveld to Hazyview, then south on the R536 to the Sabi Sand gates. Well-maintained highway for most of the journey.
  • R40 via White River: More scenic route through Mpumalanga Panorama. Passes Blyde River Canyon (detour) and reconnects with the Sabi Sand access road south of Hazyview.

Sabi Sand Gates

The Sabi Sand has several access gates. The most commonly used are:

  • Shaw’s Gate: Northern Sabi Sand — serves MalaMala and northern lodges
  • Newington Gate: Southern Sabi Sand — serves Singita, Londolozi, Sabi Sabi, and most lodges
  • Sand River Gate: Used by some lodges in the southern section

Confirm which gate your lodge uses when booking — gates are not interchangeable and arriving at the wrong gate adds significant time.

Helicopter Transfers (Premium Option)

Several helicopter charter operators offer direct transfers from Johannesburg CBD, Sandton, or OR Tambo to any Sabi Sand airstrip. Cost: approximately USD 800–1,500 per person one-way for a 90-minute flight. Spectacular Lowveld scenery en route; the approach over Kruger’s bush is memorable.

What to Know Before You Travel

  • Luggage on light aircraft: 20 kg maximum in soft-sided bags — hard luggage is difficult to load and most operators refuse it
  • Allow 2+ hours at O.R. Tambo before domestic departure if connecting from international
  • Your lodge will arrange all ground transfers from the airstrip — confirm in advance
