Best Time to Visit Sabi Sand Game Reserve: Month-by-Month Guide

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Sabi Sand Game Reserve?

The best time to visit the Sabi Sand Game Reserve for game viewing is May to September, the dry winter season, when vegetation is low, animals concentrate at water sources, and leopard and lion sightings are at their peak. However, the Sabi Sand is exceptional year-round — the green season (November to March) offers lush landscapes, newborn animals, and good value at lower rates, making it increasingly popular with experienced safari travellers.

Month-by-Month Guide to the Sabi Sand

January – March (Green Season)

Weather: Hot (28–35°C), afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity. Vivid green vegetation.

Wildlife: Many animals give birth in December–February — impala lambs, buffalo calves, and elephant calves are everywhere. Vegetation is dense, which reduces visibility but creates photographic beauty. Leopard sightings remain good as the habituated population is present year-round.

Birding: Peak bird diversity — summer migrants from Europe and Central Africa are present, including European rollers, bee-eaters, and cuckoos.

Rates: 20–30% lower than peak season at most lodges.

April – May (Early Dry Season)

Weather: Rains ease in April; by May vegetation begins to thin. Cooler evenings.

Wildlife: Excellent and improving. Animals begin concentrating at permanent water sources as temporary water dries up. May is among the best months for predator sightings as prey becomes easier to locate.

Rates: Mid-range. May is considered a “shoulder season” with good value.

June – August (Peak Dry Season)

Weather: Cool (5–22°C), dry, virtually no rainfall. Morning game drives in open Land Rovers require warm clothing — temperatures drop to near-freezing before sunrise.

Wildlife: Peak game viewing. Vegetation at its lowest, water sources limited to permanent rivers, wildlife concentrations at maximum. This is when the Sabi Sand delivers its most dramatic sightings — multiple leopard encounters per day at top lodges are documented regularly.

Rates: Peak season pricing. Book 6–12 months in advance for premium lodges.

September – October (Late Dry Season)

Weather: Increasingly hot (30–40°C). The “suicide months” — extreme heat and dry conditions. First rains typically arrive in late October or November.

Wildlife: Wildlife is compressed around permanent water sources — viewing can be extraordinary as animals are easier to find than any other time. However, the heat is intense and afternoon game drives can be uncomfortable.

Rates: Still peak pricing but some lodges begin shoulder rates in October.

November – December (Green Season Onset)

Weather: First rains arrive, temperatures moderate slightly, bush begins to green up.

Wildlife: Short-rains period produces excellent conditions — animals are spread more widely but in better condition. This is when impala births peak, attracting predators.

Rates: December sees Christmas/New Year premium pricing. Early November is good value.
