The area is split into individual private game reserves, all offering the ultimate Big Five experience.

History

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is one of the oldest safari parks in South Africa. Sabi Private Game Reserve was officially opened in 1934 which later changed its name to the Sabi Sands Private Reserve in 1948. Today at least 6 of the original families still own large tracts of the land, with third or fourth generation owners still in possession of the land.

In 1961 fences were placed between the two game reserves; the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sands Reserve to try and eliminate the threat of foot and mouth disease and the continued threat from hunters. The eastern border fences remained in place until 1993, when they were finally removed. The animals soon migrated across the border and now roam freely between the two reserves.

The reserve is home to an abundance of wildlife including the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) and a variety of other species such as Reedbuck, Kudu, Zebra, Wild Dog and Spotted Hyena – but these are just a few of the 200 different species found at Sabi Sands.
